When it comes to taking pictures, children do not need a lot of direction. It is best to give them a broad idea and allow them to let their own creativity take over. By giving them a theme, like the ones discussed here, the child will be able to create his own vision while still learning something through the creation of art.
The Seasons
Discuss the different seasons and what each season may be represented by. Think of ideas like summer is usually hot, so what would show heat in a picture? For winter, plants are dead. What would be an example of this? After discussing it, give the child the camera and let her take pictures of what she thinks exemplifies each season.
Birthdays
Birthdays, especially the child’s birthdays, are special days. By allowing the child to photograph his own birthday, it allows him to become part of his special day in a new way. It also creates photographs that are taken from his persepective, not from the adult’s.
Friends
Have the child take a camera with her when she is playing with her friends. Let her take pictures of the different things they do and the games they play. It will make for great keepsakes for the child as she grows older because its a perspective that you would not have captured as the adult.
