THE finest work of North East Lincolnshire’s amateur photographers has gone on display to the public.

A two-week exhibition featuring 81 digital photographs has opened at Cleethorpes Library.

The images were taken by members of Cleethorpes Camera Club and Grimsby Photographic Society who have once again teamed up to put on the annual joint exhibition.

The diverse range of photographs include local scenes such as Grimsby’s iconic Dock Tower, close-up images of wildlife and action photographs of motorcycle racing.

Brian Gromett, chairman of the digital section at Cleethorpes Camera Club, said: “We have a good relationship with Grimsby and we like working together.

“We have been running this joint exhibition for the past three or four years. We also have our own exhibition which is coming up later in the summer.

“It is nice to get our work out to the wider public. We show each other images all the time, but it’s nice to let other people see what we can do and what the club can do. There’s a very good range on display. Some people are just happy to take photographs, while others want to improve and are keen to do well in competitions.

“Some of the guys from Grimsby are of national exhibition quality.”

Mr Gromett, who has been a keen photographer for all of his adult life, said the advent of digital had opened up the art of photography to a wider range of people.

He said: “I started off at the age of 17 with an Agfa camera and I worked in the darkroom at home. Now everybody has got a camera phone.

“In some respects there’s a feeling that anyone can take photographs but that’s not quite true. Anyone can take an image; getting it to look good afterwards is another skill.

“There are some images you know are straight out the camera; with others you know there has been a lot of work done.”

Jo Humberstone, secretary of the Grimsby Photographic Society, said holding the joint exhibition allowed a great diversity of work to be showcased.

She said: “Digital photography has improved year on year and photographers are thinking outside the box more.

“New editing programmes are coming out and people are using them to create all sorts of images.

“There’s such a variety of work and I would encourage anyone with an interest in photography to come and have a look.”

The exhibition was officially opened by Mark Comley, of Comley Cameras in Cleethorpes.

He said: “The standard of prints is very high. and I was extremely impressed with the quality. I would definitely encourage people to go and visit the exhibition and I hope it will encourage people to take more pictures.”

The free exhibition is on until Saturday. The library is open from 9am to 6.30pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 5.30pm on Friday and 9am to 3pm on Saturday.
